The Quoin

The Quoin

7000ha property on the eastern edge of the Midlands in Tasmania, in a transitional zone between agricultural land to the west and forested coastal mountains to the east.

90% of the land is more or less intact bush, with eucalyptus (amygdalina, viminalis, dalrympleana, ovata, pauciflora) dominating. Acacia & banksia are also common. 10% of the property was historically cleared for sheep grazing and crops: much of this land has been sown with exotic grasses, other areas feature poa and lomandra.

Tinamirakuna/The Macquarie river enters the property in the south-east and forms part of its southern border. Most of the property is ~400m above sea level, as low as ~230m at the river up to ~630m at the north-western hills. Dolerite is common above 400m, including the cliff features after which the property is named, with sandstone soils below. The property is now being managed for conservation.
